You’ve probably heard the Theodore Roosevelt quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I actually think comparison steals much more. It can come out of nowhere and rob you of a good mood, a productive day, an empowered mindset—and comparison isn’t entitled to have that much sway over you. We really don’t need things that happen to other people somewhere else influencing what’s happening to us right here and now.

I have an exercise for us. It’s a trick I use to help me when I feel triggered by a case of the “why don’t I have thats.” Instead of running through whatever frustrated, angry, and jealous self-talk I might have launched into before, I do this:
